When I first saw this I was not sure what to think. Was this a real product or was this a novelty like the gasoline powered Lazy Boy recliner I saw someone made. This is a real product intended to remove barriers that people in tradional wheel chairs face.
From the TankChair website,
“Tank Chair is a Custom off-road wheelchair that can go anywhere outdoors. TankChair conquers streams, mud, snow, sand, and gravel, allowing you to get back to nature. Using rubber tracks and high torque electric motors, TankChair can take you just about anywhere. Even the urban street and stairs, with a incline accent of up to 45 degrees, TankChair will take you anywhere and back.”
We take going to the beach and walking on the sand for granted. Not if you are in a wheel chair. What about a hike in the woods or a trek through the snow. No can do if you are in a tradional wheel chair.
As I read about the story of this invention and the inventor I was moved. You really have to read the story yourself about the Soden family. Brad Soden, a plumber and a fireman, came up with a design that allows his wife to enjoy outdoor family activities that she was otherwise unable to particapate in. It took him two years to develop and the product is now on the market.
Here’s the kicker, for every 10 chairs the company sells, TankChair is going to donate one to a fire department in a rural area so that they can give it away to someone who would not normally be able to afford one. That is so cool.
