Misterpatent

While do it yourself patent searches may seem like a good idea and a way to save a few dollars, inventors should think about what they have at stake. I have seen two things that can happen when inventors do their own search. First they spend hours looking at sites like Google or even worse the US patent office site and don’t find what they are looking for so they go directly to a patent attorney and spend thousands of dollars for a patent application that gets rejected because they were not using the right key words, were not going back far enough or they did not search foriegn patents. Second an inventor does their own search and finds something that they think is just like their idea, while according to the patent claims it has nothing to do with what they have so they end up not fileing on what could have been a profitable invention. The bottom line is that if your invention is worth doing at all it’s worth spending a couple of hundred dollars to get a professional patent search that includes a legal opinion of patentability from a registered patent attorney.
