Do you have trouble waking up in the morning? Chances are you are not naturally a morning person who just bounds out of bed. Who is? Experts say that almost half of the population repeatedly presses the snooze button, and are often late because they fall back asleep while abusing the snooze privilege.

If you are one of those people who automatically reach out and smack the snooze button again and again then typical alarm clocks and alarm clock radios probably aren’t the best solution, but what else is there? You’re used to the routine. Maybe you’ve even broken a clock or two by smacking it hard enough that it crashes off your bedside table.

As far back as the 14th century there were large clocks in clock towers that could be set to ring a gong. But it wasn’t until the French inventor Antoine Redier invented an adjustable mechanical alarm clock, in 1847 that people could have an alarm clock that fit in their homes. Redier received the first patent for an at home alarm clock but his clock was almost two feet tall and needed to be mounted on a wall.

The Seth Thomas Clock Company received the first patent for a small bedside alarm clock, in 1876. Since then we’ve become dependent on alarms to get us to work on time and employers have come to expect no excuses.

We’ve come a long way since the late 1800s. For example, the invention of plastic helped make clocks affordable to everyone. Digital clocks with backup batteries helped us do away with the problem of power outages during the night.

But now there is a new development in the history of the alarm clock, an improvement to insure that you won’t oversleep again. In 2005, Ms. Gauri Nanda, an MIT grad student, invented a clock that will run away and hide from you if you don’t get off of bed. She called her new invention Clocky. When the alarm sounds, Clocky will wait for you to get up one time. But if you snooze, Clocky will jump off of your nightstand, and run around your room, forcing you to get out of bed and find it to turn off the alarm.

The first design of Clocky had the clock looking like a piece of shag carpet but recent designs feature two large wheels on each side of a charming, hip, sleek clock pod. The clock has even won prestigious awards for its innovative functionality and humor.

Bottom line, if you want to make sure you never oversleep again, Clocky is going to be your new best friend.
